Starting School in Reception

starting school

Applications to Broad Town School are managed by Wiltshire Council and you can access the application page by going to www.wiltshire.gov.uk and then click on school admissions. This will clearly outline the admissions criteria. On this site, you can complete an on-line application form.

You can apply for a school place from 1st September. The application deadline is 15th January.

You apply through Wiltshire Council

  • You submit an application online (or on a paper form) to Wiltshire Council by the national deadline (usually 15 January for Reception places starting the following September).
  • You can list up to three schools, in order of preference.

Wiltshire has a co-ordinated admissions system, meaning they manage all applications together so each child gets one single offer of a place, based on this order of preference and each school’s specific criteria.

How they decide who gets in

If a school has fewer applicants than places, everyone who applied there gets a place. If a school is oversubscribed (more applications than available places), the council applies the  oversubscription criteria

  1. Children in public care or previously in care (“looked after”).
  2. Children with specific needs (e.g., certain medical needs) with evidence.
  3. Sibling link – children with brothers or sisters already at the school (and still attending).
  4. Children who live within the school’s catchment or designated area.
  5. Distance – typically, the closer the home to the school, the higher the priority.

Offer results and waiting lists

  • You’ll be notified on National Offer Day (usually mid-April) whether your child has a place and at which school.
  • If none of your preferred schools can offer a place, the council will offer a place at the nearest school with availability.
  • If you want to challenge the decision, you have a right to appeal to an independent panel.
  • Apply by deadline to Wiltshire Council.
  • List up to three preferences in order.
  • Council matches applications with school criteria.
  • If oversubscribed, schools use their criteria to prioritise offers.
  • You get one offer on National Offer Day.
  • If you don’t get a preferred school, you’re offered a place elsewhere.
  • You can appeal or ask to stay on waiting lists

The school's admission number (PAN) is 12 children for the  year group.Places are allocated in accordance with the Wiltshire Council Admissions criteria, as they are our admissions body. This also applies if there are more applicants than places.

When the school has been sent a list of the new children who have been given a place to start at our school, we will write to you to invite you to attend a parents meeting. We will inform you of the dates and times of the taster sessions which normally take place at the end of June and the begining of July. We will aslo give you information about the gradual induction to school for September.

A parent or carer of a primary age child can request that the school delay or defer their child's entry to reception. To defer recepton entry in wiltshire, apply as normal by the January deadline but also submit a formal request to thee LA via their forms page. You will be required to outline your reasons, supporting evidence (medical/developmental), and indicating you want your child to start school the following year.

Changing your child's school in the middle of a year

If you are considering applying for a place at Broad Town School, we recommend that you initially contact the school to arrange an appointment. This will then provide an opportunity for you to meet the headteacher to find out about our school. Applications for places are then made via Wiltshire Council.

As all admissions are via Wiltshire Council, please go to www.wiltshire.gov.uk and click the tab 'changing your child's school in the middle of a school year'. On this website you will find a transfer form to complete. Please discuss this with with the headteacher of your present school as there is a section on the form that they need to complete.

In-Year admissions must be processed by the LA within 15 school days. The local auhority should inform the school of the application and the school wil confirm with the Local Authority (LA) whether we have places available. A decision letter will then be sent out to parents and the school by the LA. If you decide to take up an offered place once you have received your decision letter then please ring the school to make the necessary arrangments for your child to start at our school.
